Knicks in Discussions with Maurice Ager (UPDATE)
Rumor earlier had it that the Knicks had signed 26-year old Maurice Ager, a 6’5″ guard who had split time over three seasons in Dallas and New Jersey. Scott Schroeder later tweeted that while Ager had not signed with the team, he was in “serious discussions” regarding a contract.
Ager was selected in the first-round of the 2006 draft by the Mavericks, with a reputation of being an athletic shooter. However, he has failed to catch on in the NBA, struggling with his shot – a 32.6 FG% in 78 games – and being relegated to the D-League last year. However, as a Maine Red Claw, he averaged 18.1 points per 40 minutes with a vastly improved FG% mark of 47.6.
In all likelihood, the deal will be a quick, non-guaranteed training camp contract, the first of several the Knicks may add as that part of the schedule nears, and release afterwards. As pointed out here, there’s little room for another regular player, let alone a guard. In addition, presuming the two remaining unsigned draft picks are signed, Ager would put the team’s roster one man over the maximum.
UPDATE: Via HoopsWorld: “Free agent Mo Ager has agreed to a deal with the New York Knicks… should be officiated shortly.”
